Much more than walkie-talkies

Few Cambridge-born innovations have had such colossal success in their reach over the past 15 years as Sepura, designing and manufacturing world-leading radio communications technology.

As designers and manufacturers of some of the most powerful and reliable digital radios in the world, Sepura’s communications technology is used by police forces in the UK, Sweden and Australia, and by security details in the Middle East, as well as transportation services in the United States.

Digital radios for communication

By ‘digital radio’ we do not mean the kind which plays music. The kind of digital radios Sepura designs and manufactures are more like what are informally referred to as ‘walkie-talkies.’

Sepura digital radios grew quickly out of the heart of Cambridge, to become some of the most popular on the planet.

To call a device like the Sepura STP8X000 TETRA Hand-Portable Radio a walkie-talkie, however, would be doing it a disservice. The result of over 10 years of development in field communications technology, radios like the STP8X000 are built to withstand even the harshest environments - warzones, building sites, changing weather conditions.

Sepura digital radios grew quickly out of the heart of Cambridge, to become some of the most popular on the planet.

Who uses Sepura radios?

Since being founded in 2002, Sepura has expanded around the world, into industries ranging from law enforcement, to the Olympic Games. From its roots just outside of Waterbeach, the company has touched down on almost every continent, building an impressive portfolio along the way.

2002

Became the leading supplier of portable radios for the UK’s police forces.

2004

First to integrate GPS in a TETRA hand-held radio. This would prove to be incredibly useful for both the logistics of running complex operations on large sites, and to mission safety for security and enforcement groups.

2005

Sepura wins the UK Business Award for International Trade.

2006

The Swedish police forces switch to using Sepura hand-held radios.

2007

Sepura is listed on the London Stock Exchange, a testament to the company’s expansion and the capability of Cambridge to nurture world-leading businesses. In the same year, Sepura became the world's leading supplier of TETRA radios. TETRA stands for Terrestrial Trunked Radio.

2009

17,000 Sepura radios are sent for use in Portugal.

2010

Sepura becomes the world’s leading supplier of TETRA radios in public safety, encompassing law enforcement and other security details.

2011

Officially the leading supplier of radios for the Australian mining industry.

2012

Supplies North America’s first operational fleet of TETRA radios. This is a fantastic achievement, especially given the United States’s capacity and capability to produce its own high-quality radios.

2013

Installed at CERN, the science centre dedicated to pushing the boundaries of physics, and where the famous Higgs boson was discovered.

By 2014, Sepura had offices in Australia, Brazil, North America, Dubai and Kuala Lumpur, and in an ever-expanding digital world, where connectivity and security are top priorities, the future looks bright for Cambridge’s Sepura, as they continue to walk the walk, and the talk the talk.
